Start Spreadin’ the News; Red Bull in NYC This Year

January 18, 2010 — It’s known as the Big Apple and The City that Never Sleeps. But this year, it will be known for one more thing — the Red Bull Air Race World Championship.

New York City, in partnership with NYC & Company, Jersey City, New Jersey and Liberty State Park, will host the fifth race of the 2010 Red Bull air race series on June 19-20 over the Hudson River. Other locations for 2010 include Abu Dhabi, UAE; Perth, Australia; Lisbon, Portugal; and EuroSpeedway Lausitz, Germany.

“The Red Bull Air Race World Championship will, without a doubt, bring a new element of adventure to this city, and add to the incredible roster of events taking place here in 2010,” said NYC & Company CEO George Fertitta.

The Red Bull Air Race is different from all other motorsports in that it takes its racetrack with it wherever it goes. That isn’t an easy task since organizers must transport 380 tons of infrastructure and race equipment including 15 lightweight, 24-foot wingspan race planes and the sport's own traveling air traffic control tower.

Fifteen pilots from around the world will compete for the title this year, including defending champion Paul Bonhomme of the UK. Americans Kirby Chambliss, of Arizona, and Michael Goulian, of Massachusetts. Other returning pilots include 2008 champion Hannes Arch (AUT), Matt Hall (AUS), Nicolas Ivanoff (FRA), Nigel Lamb (GBR), Peter Besenyei (HUN), Matthias Dolderer (GER), Sergey Rakhmanin (RUS), Alejandro Maclean (ESP), Yoshi Muroya (JPN) and Pete McLeod (CAN).

American Mike Mangold announced in October he will retire after six years of participating in the air races, stating he wanted to spend more time with his family and focus on jet racing and air shows. Mangold joined the Red Bull Air Race World Championship in 2004 and has twice won the world championship in 2005 and 2007.

Also announcing his retirement after the 2009 season was South African Glenn Dell. Dell and Mangold are being replaced by Brazilian Adilson Kindlemann, 36, and Czech pilot Martin Sonka, 31.
