EAA Chapter 74’s January Young Eagles Event

Orlando, Fla. – February 27, 2006 – Enjoying clear skies and the unseasonably warm temperatures, nine pilots from EAA Chapter 74 (Orlando) treated 77 youngsters to EAA Young Eagles flights on Saturday morning, January 28. Flying from Showalter Flying Services at Orlando Executive Airport, it was an excellent day for everyone involved. All flights went smoothly and were completed in just less than two hours.

Two of Chapter 74’s stalwart Young Eagles pilots surpassed major milestones. Air Boss and pilot Mike Sills flew his 500th Young Eagle, and CarolAnn Garratt flew her 300th.

Richard Ortega, Vice President of Aerospace Education for the Air Force Association of Florida said, “Today’s event was a tremendous success.  We always learn and improve the operational effectiveness – the Second Safety Zone was a winner!  My three cadets enjoyed immensely the pleasure of assisting with tarmac operations.”

Thanks to Richard’s suggestion, for the first time the Chapter implemented a 20 foot wide “buffer zone” between the preflight holding area and the passageway onto the tarmac itself using safety cones and yellow “caution” tape. This enabled complete separation between children, parents and the operations area.
Pilot totals for the day were: Bob Caime - 12 Young Eagles; Dave Berelsman - six Young Eagles; Carol Ann Garratt - six Young Eagles; Mike Sills - 11 Young Eagles; Ron Wood - 12 Young Eagles; Fred Weaver – nine Young Eagles; Greg Vogelpohl – eight Young Eagles; Ken Gregory – nine Young Eagles; Don McLendon – five Young Eagles.
