Young Eagles AirVenture Forum

EAA AirVenture 2007
By: Emily Bultman

On Tuesday, July 24, a forum was hosted by Field Representative Jim Dukeman of EAA Chapter 1114. The forum was attended by both new program participants and seasoned veterans. Jim’s open forum concept allowed for an exchange of ideas on procedures, rallies, recruiting and many other topics.

The forum began with a discussion on conducting rallies. Jim explained one of basic requirement for pilots to become involved in the Young Eagles program is to be a member of EAA but that individual does not have to be affiliated with a chapter. In addition, he informed pilots that by completing ten flights a year, credits with me issued to use towards sending Young Eagles to the EAA Air Academy.

One pilot shared that he keeps track of the kids that he flies and sends the children Christmas cards. It was also suggested the pilot provide contact information so if the child is interested in staying involved in aviation, they will have a resource.

To recruit more children to attend rallies and events, Jim discussed how pilots in his chapter offer to take a child again for a second flight if they bring more kids with them. EAA Chapter 1114 has also developed a pre-flight group for children ages 12-17 to continue to develop their knowledge of aviation. The club builds props and went through a ground school that consisted for 112 hours. Ten of the twelve students signed off in the written exam upon the completion of the program.

The closing remarks referred to organizations to contact for future events including rotary clubs, Jaycees and other community groups. Many chapters currently work with the Make-A-Wish program, Ronald McDonald House, Deaf and Blind schools and Scout. School Districts can often become involved but Jim mentioned it is important get the teachers interested so they are ability to use aviation knowledge in the classroom.
