Miami, Okla. – October 29, 2008 – What better way to spend a beautiful fall day than flying Young Eagles?
The weather was near perfect - a brisk, mostly sunny, warm Sunday afternoon at the Miami, OK Airport and volunteer pilots from EAA Chapter 463 (and one from EAA Chapter 732) donated their aircraft and time to fly 61 youth from the Missouri, Kansas and Oklahoma. Other members of 463 and the Grove, Okla., Civil Air Patrol Squadron supported the event.
CAP and EAA members gathered at the airport at noon for the safety briefing. Shortly afterward, prospective Young Eagles began to arrive and were processed administratively by Joetta Waide and Caroll Knotts. After the paperwork, Young Eagle candidates went to the hangar for a brief, pre-flight ground school. Then they went to the front of the hangar to wait for aircraft assignment.
As soon as an aircraft was available, the Young Eagles were escorted on the flight line to and from the aircraft by Civil Air Patrol Cadets.
Participating pilots included Al Smith, Phil Belcher, Jim Belcher, Ray Weeks, Joe Robinson, Don Kwasa, and Paul Dolph. Aircraft flown included three Cessna 150s, three Cessna 172s, and a Cessna 177.
