Students Soar at SERFI

Evergreen, Alabama – October 28, 2008 –Among the many aviation activities held during the annual Southeast Regional Fly In (SERFI) are EAA Young Eagle flights, where youths age 8-17 get to discover the joy of flying for free.

John Sweeting, Chief Warrant Officer 4, U.S. Navy (Retired), says he doesn’t understand why others don’t take advantage of the program.

Sweeting, a Senior Naval Science Instructor at Escambia County High School in Atmore, Alabama, brought 15 Junior Navy ROTC students to SERFI last weekend at Middleton Field in Evergreen, Alabama, for the Southeastern Regional Fly In. The 18th annual aviation event was held October 24-26.

“Coming to SERFI is really the highlight of our school year,” Sweeting said. Young fliers prepare for their flight with class instruction on force, motion, and aerodynamics.

EAA Chapter 825 Coordinators Dawson Moore and Fred Masterson organized the flights. Together they helped volunteer pilots Johnny Ward, Burt Put, Jim Cawthon, and Gary Ernest fly the Young Eagles on Saturday. When the flying was done, there were 24 new Young Eagles who received their introduction to flight and were presented with EAA Young Eagles certificates.

Thirteen of those participating were Escambia students.

“I now have a couple of seniors who are aspiring to aviation in college because of the interest generated at a previous SERFI,” Sweeting said.
