EAA Chapter 1445 Rally report

Casa Grande, Ariz. - April 15, 2009 – What does “Congemino Primus” mean and what does it have to do with this article?

It is Latin for “Double First” and our EAA Chapter 1445 experienced a double first on April 4, 2009.

Not only was it the first Young Eagle flight event held solely by our Chapter, but also the first-ever Young Eagle event held solely for the Sacaton Gila River Indian Community.

Our Young Eagle Chairman, Joe Williams, went down to Sacaton Middle School and gave a presentation to them and invited them to this flying session. Twelve honor students in the middle school signed up for their flight.

We had a very good turnout with three Stearmans, flown by Terry Emig, Billy Walker and Larry Dustman; Tom Snider in his Bonanza; Mike Still in his Fairchild 24 W; and Jud Bickel in his helicopter. With this wide variety of flying machines, all the kids got their choice of aircraft.

As usual, chapter member Vic Cina had a good list of volunteers to help load the Young Eagles in and out of the aircraft in a safe and orderly fashion.

Joe Williams had a good preflight briefing for all those participating in the event. This was followed by a group picture-taking session both inside the terminal and out at the aircraft.

Engine start was promptly at 08:00 and continued until all the children got their rides. After the flight, the pilots presented to the new Young Eagles a blue bracelet and a Flight Certificate.

All the kids left with great big smiles on their faces and all of us were really impressed with their enthusiasm and courteous manners. If just one of them goes on to a career in aviation, we will have done our part to promote aviation and to give these very special individuals a new purpose in life.

A hearty thanks to all who helped make this first event a safe and very special event for the new Young Eagles!
