Girls with Wings offers $1,000 Scholarship

September 10, 2009 — Girls need flight plans, not fairy tales.

That statement, found on top of the
Girls With Wings website, sums up the purpose of the organization. Girls With Wings is an e-commerce merchandising and public awareness project that focuses on introducing girls to their role models in aviation-related careers and hobbies. The project hopes its website activities and inspirational stories of women involved in various aspects of aviation will motivate girls to pursue their own skyward adventures.

But beyond that, the group is offering a $1,000 scholarship to be used for flying lessons. To apply for the scholarship, you must include a photo of yourself and write an essay of any word length telling why you believe you are a role model for Girls With Wings, including your motivation, inspiration and future plans.

The 2009 winner will be judged on her willingness to "be a superlative Girls With Wings role model," and show potential to continue her interaction with the organization and encourage more young girls to pursue their interest in aviation.

More than 30 people applied for the scholarship last year, which was won by 20-year-old Amy Blechman, a student studying aviation management with a professional pilot minor. Click
here to read her essay.

The deadline to submit your scholarship application is November 1, 2009. Email your essay to
scholarship@girlswithwings.com. The scholarship winner will be notified December 1 and sent a check to be used for flying lessons at a flight school of her choice.
