Another Young Eagle Earns His Wings

May 13, 2010 — On June 11, 2001, Daniel Schick (Young Eagle # 698126) became a Young Eagle when he and volunteer Fred Stadler took flight from EAA’s Pioneer Airport.

This past week, Daniel – now 22 – earned his private pilot certificate by passing his checkride, administered by Jason Blair, executive director of the
National Association of Flight Instructors and an FAA designate flight examiner.

The Young Eagles flight was Schick’s first ride in a small airplane and it had a profound effect on him. “That was really a fun, exciting time for me – the first time ever in a small plane,” he recalled. “Young Eagles was great for me.”

He became even more enamored with flight after earning his Aviation Merit Badge en route to becoming an Eagle Scout. Schick, from Oconomowoc, Wisconsin, fortified his aviation appetite by attending every AirVenture Oshkosh since. Over the years he saved up enough money for flight lessons, and decided to begin flight training in January 2009 at
Orion Flight Services, Oshkosh.

“Dan was a top notch student. He was very motivated, hard working, thorough, and had a great attitude,” said his flight instructor, Whitney Stanley, “He was easy to teach and absorbed the knowledge quickly.”

Schick graduates this weekend from
Ripon College with a double-major degree in chemistry and physics, then heads to the University of Wisconsin, Madison, next fall to study mechanical engineering. Although school will be the focus in the near term, he looks forward to earning advanced flight ratings and flying a much as he can.

“I look forward to taking people up with me,” he said. “Maybe even Young Eagles.”
