Challenge Air raffles Airplane

EAA AirVenture Oshkosh - July 31, 2005 – A winner was selected on Sunday in a raffle held by Challenge Air for Kids and Friends. With the help of Patty Wagstaff, aerobatic champion and air show star, and Dick Koenig of Flying Magazine, Tim Ranville of Clio, Michigan was picked as the winner of a new Lancair Aircraft.

Representing Challenge Air for Kids and Friends, Byron Laszlo, the Development/Special Events Director, and Theron Wright, the Director of Community Affairs and wheelchair aviator, engaged the crowd before the drawing. Patty Wagstaff also entertained by speaking, signing autographs and posing for photos with fans.

Flying Magazine, with Lancair, Superior Engines (engine donation) and David Clark Company Incorporated (headsets) put on the fundraising raffle. The money raised will support Challenge Air activities.

Challenge Air for Kids and Friends is a not-for-profit organization designed to allow young people with physical challenges an exciting experience in aviation. Through these flight experiences with physically challenged pilots, young people are inspired to look beyond their limitations and work toward their dreams. After each flight, these children also become EAA Young Eagles and are entered into “The World’s Largest Logbook”.

With an awesome example set by pilots such as Theron Wright, a man whose gracious and fun personality is completely contagious, the kids who participate in this program have the experience of a lifetime.

Challenge Air Event Details:

    • Typically there are about 12 events held per year.

    • The events generally run from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m.

    • There are 100 -150 children usually in the 7-17 year age bracket that participate in the event.

    • Kids have the opportunity to take a 20-30 minute flight, learn from a stationary aircraft display, go to ground school where they are taught to use specially designed hand controls for flying, and they can enjoy food, refreshments, entertainment and arts and crafts.

Theron Wright looks on as Patty Wagstaff hands a winning ticket to Dick Koenig of Flying Magazine.
