Outstanding Students Attend EAA AirVenture

Newburgh, N.Y. – December 1, 2005 – Through a program offered to members of the Lee A. Archer, Jr. Red Tail Youth flying program, four high school students flew from New York to Wisconsin for EAA AirVenture Oshkosh 2005

On July 27, Leslie Caesar, Shannon O’Brien, Laisa Pertet, and Patrick Palmisano split up and climbed into two Piper Arrows accompanied by their instructors Grant Russell and Dave Farley for their journey. Out of the 21 students in the program, these four students were chosen to participate because of their excellence and determination throughout the year.

It was a three-day excursion with two of those days spent in the air. The group departed from Stewart Airport in New York and at the Outagamie County Airport in Appleton, Wis., on Thursday evening. The two students in each plane were able to take turns at the controls during the flights. Upon arrival, they headed to their hotel for some much needed rest in preparation for the following day.

Friday was spent at the Convention looking at exhibits and walking through the more than 600 acres of airplanes that had flown in from all over the world. One of the best aspects of the Convention for the students was the air show. They enjoyed watching the routines performed and were especially impressed by Patty Wagstaff flying her Extra, an aerobatic demonstration airplane.

Early Saturday morning the group loaded back up and took off on an enjoyable flight home where the students again got the opportunity to pilot the aircraft.

After having started out in New York on Friday morning, the group of six covered a lot of ground in three days and had an amazing experience. They returned enthusiastic about their experiences and ready to share their newfound knowledge with their anxious families waiting for them at the airport.
