Use your imagination and win!

April 28, 2008 — Have an idea for a space settlement? Or maybe for a science fiction story about colonization of the moon?

Both could win you cool prizes in a new contest.

The space settlement contest, co-sponsored by NASA Ames and the National Space Society, is open to 11 to 18 years olds. Individuals, teams of two to six, and large teams of seven or more may enter from anywhere in the world.

In 2008, NASA received 156 submissions from 840 students sponsored by 74 teachers. Entries came from Bulgaria, Canada, China, India, Iran, Japan, Pakistan, Romania, Singapore, Slovenia and Uruguay. U.S. entries were received from 10 states: California, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Maryland, Missouri, New Jersey, New York, North Dakota and Utah.

For the 2009 competition, contestants must develop space settlement designs and related materials. Submissions must be received by March 31, 2009. Click here for more information.

NSS is co-sponsoring a second contest, the Return to Luna Short Story Contest, along with Hadley Rille Books.

Contestants should write 2,000 to 6,000-word science fiction stories that show the adventure of lunar settlement — the romance of life there, the wonder of the lunar frontier and of its magnificent desolation. Stories should take place in the near future — 50 to 150 years from now — and be realistic.

Click here for guidelines. Entries are due June 15, 2008.
