September 30, 2010 — September 20, 2010, is a day Daniel Manzani will always remember. Not only was it his 17th birthday, but he also passed his checkride and earned a private pilot certificate. Daniel, of Temecula, Calif., got his first taste of general aviation on an October 18, 2008, Young Eagles flight with Gary Timbs (EAA 796894/Warbirds of America 553929) in Timbs’ Cessna 180.
The flight inspired Daniel to take the Sporty’s Complete Online Pilot Training Course, which prepares student pilots for the FAA written exam and is provided free to all Young Eagles. Daniel, who soloed on his 16th birthday, is among the first Young Eagles to complete the Sporty’s course and pass the exam. He also applied for and received a $1,500 EAA flight-training scholarship to help with his training.
Daniel currently has logged more than 70 hours of flight time, mainly in a Cessna 172N out of French Valley Airport (F70) in Murrieta, Calif. His goal is to become a flight instructor and a commercial pilot.
More than 4,800 Young Eagles are already enrolled in the free Sporty’s online course, part of EAA’s Flight Plan. When a Young Eagle completes part one of the Sporty’s course, they are eligible to receive a free first flight lesson though EAA. In addition, upon completing the entire Sporty’s course students can apply for flight scholarships generously provide by Rolls-Royce, Jim and Angela Thompson, and Harrison Ford.
