EAA Chapter 684’s Young Eagle Rally

Olympia, Wash. – June 11, 2005
Submitted by Scott Cutler
President EAA Chap. 684

Bright shining faces were lighting up the Olympia, Washington airport, even though the sun did not, during EAA Chapter 684’s Young Eagle rally on June 11th.

With threatening clouds that brought a few light showers and gusty winds, our enthusiastic pilots shared the joy of flying with their eager passengers.

Gary Fasnacht, our chapter’s Young Eagle coordinator, brought in his newly acquired motor home from which the pilots and ground crew could produce the certificates and stay out of the weather. Digital pictures were taken of each pilot and passenger and printed while they were in the air. These 8” x 10” pictures were greatly appreciated by the kids and their parents. Jerry Thorstrom brought in the food for the Young Eagle crew to keep everything running smoothly.

One of the memorable moments was after an apprehensive passenger got strapped into Dale Statler’s Avid and said, “I think I need a bigger airplane.” He went up in the air and enjoyed his flight in a Cessna 170 instead.

A special thanks to EAA Chapter 609 for sharing some of their pilots with us.

In all, twenty-five kids got to experience their first flight in a small aircraft and all (pilots included) said they would love to do it again!
