EAA Chapter 287’s IYED Report

Cape May Airport, N.J. – 6/11/05

Submitted by Bill Craft, Webmaster EAA Chapter 287

EAA Chapter 287 held an event on June 11, in honor of International Young Eagles Day. The weather forecast for the weekend had not been looking good, but at the last minute the highs and lows called a truce and provided a good day for flying.

Chapter 287’s event was not only an opportunity to fly Young Eagles, but a tribute to one of our members, Gary Workman, who passed away in the spring of this year. Contributions were made to the Young Eagles program in his honor. Patti, his wife, was on hand to help with event. Gary and Patti have always been very involved with children, education and flying so it was natural for them to support Young Eagles.

We had four pilots and planes with the honor of flying Young Eagles – Tom Callahan in his Money, Eddy Wuerker in his Cherokee 160, Cathy Zane flying a Cherokee 140 and Gene Beatty standing by with the chapter president’s Piper Pacer if the crowds got too big.

Ike Harris, the Young Eagles chairman, coordinated the day with the help of Bill Craft, Chapter Webmaster. Our thanks go out to everyone who helped and to the Naval Air Station Wildwood Museum for the use of their facilities for the day.

The Chapter provided free coffee, soda, bottled water and hot dogs to all participants. We had a good turnout and lots of smiling faces after the flights. I know we hosted at least one future astronaut, if not two.

Bill Craft and the maintenance crew at NASW provided some last minute repairs to Ed’s plane so it would be available for the event. Ed didn’t want to miss the opportunity to fly the Young Eagles!
