Kalamazoo, Mich. – January 6, 2006 – EAA Chapter 221 wrapped up their Young Eagles flying season in a unique way. The chapter created the “Taste of Aviation – To the Skies and Beyond Fall Camporee”, giving Boy Scouts from Southwest Michigan the opportunity to take part in a new program designed to familiarize them with the different aspects of aviation.
On Saturday, October 15, 2005, nearly 400 boys camping out on the Kalamazoo, Michigan AirZoo grounds learned about airplanes and flight in a very hands-on way.
The were able to take part in many events, such as EAA Young Eagles Flights, tours of the AirZoo museum which included rides in three axis simulators, and an informational segment about Rocketry given by AirZoo personnel. They were also able to earn an Aviation Merit Badge with the assistance of the Civil Air Patrol and an Astronomy Merit Badge through the Kalamazoo Astronomical Society.
By the end of the day, the EAA “World’s Largest Logbook” which holds the names of all Young Eagles following their flights, had 209 new names of enthusiastic Boy Scouts.
Twelve EAA volunteer pilots, Terry Brokaw, Dick Foster, Jim Gardner, Barb Goodwin, Bob Goodwin, Mike McCarville, Andy Millin, Duane Packer, Frank Pervanger, Tim Popp, Dave Russell, and Joel Zieve provided free airplane rides to the Scouts.
Everything went according to plan with the help of the ground crew volunteers, Dan Blaskie, Richard Bauer, Liz Popp, Conrad Krapf and Sue Carpp.
