Addison, Ill. – January 12, 2006 – Flying since 1993, with the help of 62 pilots, EAA Chapter 101 has now flown their 5,000th Young Eagle. On Dec. 4th, 8-year-old Tyler R. Grey of Streamwood, Ill., took to the skies with Ken Miess in his Cherokee Archer after patiently waiting for the runway to be de-iced. Schaumburg Municipal Airport had been closed from 9 a.m. until noon in order to clear the runway of snow.
Following the exciting flight, Grey received a special 5,000th Young Eagles plaque along with other flight-related gifts given to him to remember the special occasion.
“The day had started out cold and overcast with snow flurries – not looking much like a good day for flying,” said Tim Coltrin, Chapter 101 Young Eagles Coordinator. “But by 10:30 a.m., the sun was shining and except for temperatures in the mid 20s, with 10-15 mph winds, it was looking pretty good.”
Also flying that day was Butch Bejna in his Cessna 150 and Skip Meyers flying a Cherokee 140. Providing ground school instruction was George Northam. Other ground volunteers were Kathy Thompson, Tom Thompson, Ed and Betty Iwanski, Rich Wegel, Dolores Neunteufel, and Bev Coltrin. Other Chapter members assisting were Lou and Connie Bos, Mike Neunteufel, and Bryan Sill.
Proud of their accomplishment, the members of EAA Chapter 101 are looking forward to their next 5,000 Young Eagles!
