Eagles Wings

Volume 15, No. 2

GREETINGS
The 2011 Young Eagles flying season is off to a good start. Registration forms are arriving at a steady pace. If you've had an event this year, please make sure you send in your paperwork as soon as possible. It's important that the pilots receive the recognition they deserve and that your Young Eagles have access to the benefits of the Young Eagles Flight Plan (see below). Your dedication and volunteer efforts are an inspiration to all. You're definitely the leaders we need in the field to encourage our other Young Eagles volunteers. Remember, if you're receiving this newsletter but are no longer a Young Eagles coordinator, please let us know so we can update our records. Thank you!

COORDINATOR INFORMATION
The 2011 Coordinator CD should be in your hands by now. If not, please contact me. Take time to open it up as there are PDFs available and other important Young Eagles information. You can also access the resources on our website.

YOUNG EAGLES FLIGHT PLAN
The Young Eagles Flight Plan is a five-step process to help interested Young Eagles earn a pilot certificate.

Step 1 starts with a Young Eagles flight. After the flight, make sure your Young Eagles receives a logbook and buck slip. The buck slip helps unlock the other benefits of the Flight Plan.

Step 2 is a free EAA Student Membership with all the benefits of a regular EAA membership, except the EAA Sport Aviation magazine is delivered in a digital format.

Step 3 is access to the Sporty's Complete Pilot Training Course, an online class that uses interactive video and animation to help Young Eagles pass all of their FAA tests in preparation for their final flight test.

Step 4 is a free flight lesson. The Sporty's course is split into two parts, and after completing part one of the course Young Eagles are eligible for a flight lesson certificate good at nearly all flight schools across the United States and Canada.

Step 5 provides access to flight training awards and scholarships, including $1,500 awards (given away monthly) and three $7,500 scholarships (given away annually).

All in all, the Young Eagles Flight Plan can provide interested and dedicated Young Eagles a pathway to a pilot certificate. For more details, visit the Flight Plan page on the Young Eagles website.

We thank the sponsors who have helped make the Flight Plan possible: ConocoPhillips, Sporty's Pilot Shop, Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, Lightspeed Aviation, Global Aerospace, and the Rolls-Royce and the Jim and Angela Thompson and Harrison Ford scholarship funds.

We look forward to seeing you at EAA AirVenture Oshkosh 2011, July 25 to July 31.

ICE
In this case, "ICE" isn't something we have to scrape off our windshields in winter or keep off our wings in flight. Rather, "ICE" is short for In Case of Emergency. Young Eagles volunteers have compiled a great safety record during the past 17 years. However, no matter how careful we are, there are times when things don't go as planned.

First and foremost: Make sure first aid and qualified medical personnel are immediately notified of any injury, and protect damaged property from any further damage.

If there is an incident or accident at a Young Eagles event, please contact EAA Risk Management as soon as possible with the following information:

  • Date, time, and location of the incident

  • Names, addresses, and telephone contact numbers for all injured persons

  • Names, addresses, and telephone contact numbers for all witnesses.

In addition:

  • Have someone take immediate photographs of the incident if possible

  • Don't discuss the facts leading up to the incident at anytime with the news media

  • Report the incident to a local FAA office or other government authority if applicable.

Emergency Contact Info for EAA Risk Management:
Karen Kryzaniak, 920-426-4822 (weekdays 8:15 a.m. to 5 p.m. Central Standard Time) or 920-379-4822 (cell)

MICHELLE'S THOUGHTS
As I prepare for AirVenture, I can't help but think about some of the reasons I really enjoy it, and some of the reasons I don't also come to mind. First of all, there's a lot of work to do while you're also doing your "regular" daily work, and not everyone realizes that fact. Some of the logistics, like the weather, can change the entire week - it did last year. Then this thought crossed my mind: You're all planning "mini AirVentures" with your Young Eagles rallies. No matter how small or big the rally is, it takes time to prepare for it while you deal with other responsibilities in life. You also face the same challenges with nature and people. Then I made this connection: We keep on doing it because of the people. Once you (my volunteers) arrive here, I'm so happy to see all my friends that it makes all the hard work definitely worth the effort. I'm quite certain you have that same feeling as your chapter members show up for your rally, especially once the kids come for their Young Eagles flights. There's something magical about providing kids with their initial connection with the world of aviation. Thank you all for being the reason I truly enjoy my work - particularly planning and being a part of the world's greatest aviation event! See you at Oshkosh! If you have any questions at about the program, please don't hesitate to contact me: e-mail, 877-806-8902, or P.O. Box 2683, Oshkosh, WI 54903.

Take care,

Michelle
